The Church of the Nazarene is committed to preparing its ministers for a lifetime of effective service. In addition to experience gained through serving in the local church and other settings, there are educational requirements that must also be met.

The goal is for every Nazarene minister to develop certain abilities and capacities by completing an array of studies and practicums called the Course of Study (COS). Those seeking ordination in the Church of the Nazarene must complete a Course of Study program that has been approved (validated) by the General Board and Board of General Superintendents. Both degree and non-degree validated COS programs are available.

Instructors and continuing students may use this link to access course materials and resources for this program in English, Spanish,
French, Korean, and Portuguese. There is limited availability of these materials in some languages other than English.

The Modular Course of Study (MCOS) Program is to be discontinued soon after the release of the new non-degree Course of Study program currently in development. The anticipated release date of the new program is mid-year 2025.

Individuals presently completing MCOS courses in preparation for ordination may find it helpful to transition now to other validated Course of Study programs in anticipation of the discontinuation of the MCOS. Students who delay transitioning until termination of the MCOS will be assisted by their district Board of Ministry based on directives supplied by the Global Clergy Development office. Every effort will be made to award credit for all MCOS courses completed by those students who transition into the new non-degree program or into another non-degree program. Students nearing completion of their preparation through the MCOS may find it best to continue in the program if the remaining coursework can be completed by the end of 2024. The transition timeline for students who do not speak English will reflect the timeline for completion of the new COS program in other languages.
